Opportunity assessment
Negligible commercial impact. Saves time at the margins but won't move the needle on revenue or profit.
Relatively straightforward. Off-the-shelf tools handle the core task. Implementation is well-understood with good examples to follow.
Light data requirements. Uses straightforward inputs — documents, product descriptions, customer records — that are usually accessible with minimal prep.
Low risk. Limited external exposure. A human reviews output before it reaches anyone outside the team.
Light people impact. A new tool slots into an existing workflow. Minimal training needed. Most people will adapt quickly.

Things to consider
Board pack structure must be agreed and locked before AI assistance is useful — the tool populates a template, not an open-ended document.
Board packs are board-level documents. Any AI-drafted content requires review by the CFO or FD before it reaches directors. Do not automate the sign-off process.
Commercial sensitivity is high. Ensure the data governance implications of using a cloud-based LLM for board-level financial data are understood and approved.
The efficiency gain is primarily in the compilation and first-draft narrative stage. The strategic commentary, context, and recommendations that make a board pack genuinely useful still require the judgment of the leadership team.
Experiment starter: For the next board meeting, use an LLM to compile and draft the factual sections of the pack (management accounts, KPI dashboard narrative, variance summary) in parallel with the normal preparation process. Compare the time taken and quality of the two outputs. If the AI draft requires less than 30 minutes of editing to reach publication standard, formalise the workflow.

Period-end commentary drafting
Convert financial data into narrative commentary for management accounts. Finance team reviews and adjusts. Eliminates the blank-page problem at month end.
Invoice exception identification
Flag invoices with missing PO references, duplicate submissions, price variances, or unusual payment terms before they reach approval.
Contract data extraction
Extract key commercial terms from supplier and customer contracts — payment terms, renewal dates, liability caps, exclusivity clauses — into structured records.
