Opportunity assessment
Minor improvement. Small efficiency gain with limited effect on overall turnover or bottom line.
Relatively straightforward. Off-the-shelf tools handle the core task. Implementation is well-understood with good examples to follow.
Light data requirements. Uses straightforward inputs — documents, product descriptions, customer records — that are usually accessible with minimal prep.
Very low risk. Fully internal use. A person checks everything before it goes further. Worst case is a minor internal inconvenience.
Very easy to absorb. Runs quietly in the background or gives people a helpful new input. Makes everyday work easier with almost no friction.

Things to consider
Public financial data is often the most reliable source for listed competitors; private company data via Companies House is limited and lagged by up to 12 months.
The AI structures and summarises; commercial interpretation ('what does this mean for our strategy?') remains a human task requiring deep sector knowledge.
Define the comparison framework before building — which KPIs matter for your business (gross margin, EBITDA margin, revenue growth, inventory turn) and ensure the AI is extracting those consistently.
Annual reports are written to be persuasive, not objective. A competitor that has had a poor year will frame their narrative to emphasise positives. The AI may summarise the narrative rather than the underlying numbers. Instruct it explicitly to extract the numbers first and treat the narrative as secondary.
Experiment starter: Identify your two most important listed competitors. Use an LLM to extract and compare five key financial metrics from their last two annual reports. Compare the output against your own current-year performance. If the analysis produces a useful benchmarking view in under two hours, set up a quarterly analysis cadence.

Period-end commentary drafting
Convert financial data into narrative commentary for management accounts. Finance team reviews and adjusts. Eliminates the blank-page problem at month end.
Invoice exception identification
Flag invoices with missing PO references, duplicate submissions, price variances, or unusual payment terms before they reach approval.
Contract data extraction
Extract key commercial terms from supplier and customer contracts — payment terms, renewal dates, liability caps, exclusivity clauses — into structured records.
