Gift card and loyalty fraud detection

30–50%
reduction in gift card and loyalty fraud losses
Opportunity assessment
Minor improvement. Small efficiency gain with limited effect on overall turnover or bottom line.
Moderate effort. Requires configuration, prompt engineering, and testing. A capable team can get there but expect several months.
Moderate data needs. Works with data most businesses hold, but will likely need consolidation, cleaning, or reformatting before use.
Moderate risk. Some customer or external exposure. Errors create rework or reputational impact but are recoverable.
Light people impact. A new tool slots into an existing workflow. Minimal training needed. Most people will adapt quickly.

Things to consider
A U.S. fashion retailer working with Cequence AI identified attackers using their systems to validate stolen credit cards and purchase gift cards. The AI identified and blocked malicious traffic without affecting legitimate customers, with estimated savings upward of $100 per compromised account (Cequence).
Gift card fraud is often invisible until reconciliation — the fraud happens at purchase (stolen card funds a gift card) and the gift card spend looks legitimate. Detection requires correlating the two events.
Loyalty programme fraud (fake accounts, points manipulation, referral abuse) requires different detection logic from gift card fraud. They're related but need separate models.
Experiment starter: Analyse your gift card and loyalty transaction data for the last 6 months. Flag transactions matching known fraud patterns (rapid balance checks, bulk purchases, unusual redemption patterns). If you find confirmed fraud exceeding £10,000 per year, the detection tool pays for itself.
